Signed out again, and the Keychain

Once you have signed in, Vixlo keeps its licence in this Mac's Keychain and opens without asking, even with no network. This page is for the launch where the card is back anyway, for the Settings line that explains a failed check, and for the Keychain itself.

What Vixlo keeps between launches

In this Mac's own Keychain, and nowhere else: the record that this Mac is signed in, an id for this Mac, the signed licence document, the time it last heard from the portal, the email on the account, and the three onboarding answers. None of it travels to another Mac through iCloud Keychain. The password is never kept.

Why the card is back

On a Mac that was signed in, the card comes back for one of two kinds of reason: the portal said the session is gone, or Vixlo could not read what it keeps in the Keychain (see The Keychain never asks).

The portal is asked at a licence check. Vixlo checks at launch, on waking from sleep and once a day while it runs, each only when a day has passed since the last check or the licence it holds has run out, and at once whenever you press Refresh in Settings. The portal says the session is gone for one of these reasons:

  • The password was changed. Every Mac on the account is signed out when the password changes.
  • This Mac was removed on the account page, under Macs signed in.
  • The account was deleted. The next check is refused and the app signs out. Your libraries are untouched; they are files on the Mac, never part of the account. Signing in again needs a new account; Deleting your account says what it starts with.
  • Support signed the account out everywhere. Every browser and every Mac on the account is signed out; each Mac signs in again to the slot it already holds.
  • The sign-in expired. A sign-in lasts thirty days past the last time the Mac checked in. A Mac that was switched off, or offline, for longer than that signs in again.

Until the check that finds this out, the Mac runs on the licence it holds. There is nothing to repair: sign in again with the same email and password, and every library opens as before.

While nobody is signed in, the Account section of Settings says so: Not signed in, the word Signed out beside the dot, and Sign in from the window that appears when Vixlo opens, with the email and password of your Vixlo account.

Settings' Account section signed out, reading Not signed in and Signed out.

The Keychain never asks

Vixlo never shows a Keychain prompt — no Allow, no Always Allow, no password panel — and never waits on one. A Keychain item it cannot read without asking is treated as if it were never there: you see the sign-in card, and nothing already stored is touched or deleted. A write it cannot make becomes a line in the Settings window, not a prompt: under Account, after Last check:, for the licence; or Could not save the Anthropic key: followed by the reason, for a key you saved there. A write refused while you sign in shows on the card instead, in the Keychain's own words; if that happens, write to support with the sentence.

The Settings line, when something is wrong

The Account section of Settings shows who is signed in and the state in one line, always. When the last licence check did not replace the licence, the line goes on with Last check: and the reason:

Settings' Account section with the status line ending in Last check: Could not reach the portal.

  • Could not reach the portal: … — this Mac is offline, or the portal is. Nothing changes; the licence you hold stands. See Working offline.
  • The portal answered followed by a number and its words — the portal refused the check. If it keeps happening, write to support with the sentence.
  • The portal sent a licence this build cannot verify (…). Update Vixlo. — the brackets hold the reason. Download the current build from the website's Download page.
  • The cached licence could not be read; sign in again if this persists. — the licence on this Mac could not be checked. It follows the state in the same line, which then reads The licence could not be renewed. Sign in again, or check the subscription on the account page. Last check: The cached licence could not be read; sign in again if this persists., with Read-only beside the dot. Press Refresh; if the line stays, Sign out and sign in again.
  • A sentence about the Keychain — a write that was refused, as above.

The line can also add This Mac's clock is earlier than the portal's; dates are judged against the portal's time. That is the clock, not the account: see The Mac's clock.

Refresh asks the portal again at once. The line clears when a check goes through.
