An import that stopped or did not verify

An import can end without every file copied and checked: a file fails its check, you press Cancel import, the backup drive misses, or Vixlo quits part way. This page is for those endings, each with the sentence the last panel shows and the way to finish. The card is not safe to format covers the endings where every copy worked and the card still is not safe to format.

Some files could not be verified

The message reads Some files could not be verified — the card is not safe to format. and goes on, for example, 2 files that did not verify were left out of the library. Scanning the card again offers them as new. A file the library already had can be among them: 1 file the library already had was missing or changed there. Scanning the card again offers it as new. Its copy in the library had gone, or changed, since the import that made it.

A copy did not match its original, or the file could not be read; a card reader that dropped out part way is enough. Those frames are not in the library, because Continue to culling adds only the frames whose copies verified. Their only copy is on the card, so keep it.

  1. Press Continue to culling to add the frames that did verify.
  2. Check the reader, the cable and the port, then scan the card again (see Scanning a card into a library that is open).
  3. In the new review, ALREADY IMPORTED counts the files the library holds and NEW the rest, the ones left out among them. Start import is the number to go by: it counts the files the import will copy, and tries each of the ones left out again from the start. With a backup chosen it also counts the files already in the library. Start import will not press says why NEW can read higher.

If the same files fail again, try another reader or port, then write to support with the sentence.

Import stopped

After Cancel import, the title reads Import stopped, not Import complete. The message gives the count: 3 of 10 files were copied and checksum-verified. 7 files were left out of the library — the card is not safe to format. Scan the card again to import them. If some of the files it did reach also failed, (2 failed to verify) follows left out of the library.

The files left out are on the card alone. Continue to culling adds the 3 that were copied, and only those. Scan the card again: the review counts those 3 as ALREADY IMPORTED, and Start import reads (7) for the other seven, or (10) with a backup chosen, because it also covers the 3 already in the library. The card is not safe to format until you have imported them.

If you cancel while the files the library already had are being copied to the backup, the title is Import stopped too, and the message reads, for example, 100 of the 640 files already in the library were copied to the backup before the import stopped — the card is not safe to format. Import the card again with the backup to finish. Scan the card again with the same backup chosen and press Start import.

Only the second copy failed

The message reads Your working library copied and verified completely — every photograph is safe to cull. Only the second copy failed; choose a different backup location before erasing the card.

Your library is whole, and you can press Continue to culling. It is the backup that missed: check that the backup drive is plugged in, has room and can be written to, then scan the card again with it chosen. The files are in the library by then, so the import checks each copy there and makes the backup copy; nothing is copied into the library twice. Until a second verified copy exists, keep the card or make that copy yourself.

An import that was interrupted

If Vixlo quits, or the Mac shuts down, part way through an import, scan the same card again. Copies already made are kept, but only after Vixlo checks that the file on the card is still the one it copied (same size, same date, same bytes at its start and end) and that the copy has not changed. A different card is never taken for the old one: a card formatted in camera comes back under the same name with the same file names, and has every file copied.
