A card Vixlo does not see

Vixlo offers a card as a one-click source wherever a library is made, but only when one is really in the Mac. This page says what counts as a card, what to do when yours is not offered, and what to check when the way into a library that is already open does nothing. Start import will not press is for the review that follows, and says what its figures count.

Where a card is offered

  • On the launch screen, under New library: a button reading Start from the detected card · and the card's name. A removable disk without a camera's folder structure gets Start from and its name instead.
  • On step 2 of the new-library wizard, Choose the source: a row Card · with its name, above Choose a folder….

The launch screen's New library column with the Start from the detected card button.

Neither appears when no card is mounted: Vixlo shows no button rather than one that does nothing.

What counts as a card

A disk macOS reports as removable or ejectable, mounted on this Mac. A card with a DCIM folder is the detected card, listed first, and its scan starts inside that folder; any other removable disk is listed after it. The Mac's internal drive is never a card, and a network share is never one either, however it is mounted.

Where on a card the scan starts does not change what Vixlo accounts for. When it says whether the card is safe to format, it speaks for the whole card, not only DCIM. When a card is safe to format has the rule.

When the card is not offered

  1. Check that the Mac itself sees it: it should appear in the Finder's sidebar or on the desktop. If macOS has not mounted the card, Vixlo cannot see it. Reseat it, or try another reader or port.
  2. The list of cards is read when the launch screen is drawn, not watched afterwards. If the card went in while Vixlo was already on the launch screen and no button appeared, quit and reopen Vixlo, or go on to the next step.
  3. Choose it as a folder instead. In the wizard's step 2, press Choose a folder…; the picker says Choose a folder or card to import into this library. Choose the card's DCIM folder, which is what the card's own row would have scanned, or the card itself, which also reads photographs in the card's other folders.

The wizard's step 2 with a Card row, the Choose a folder… row, and the three scan numbers.

Scanning a card into a library that is open

A library that is already open has no card button. Press ⋯ at the right-hand end of the views line, choose Library…, then Scan a card or folder…. File ▸ Scan Source… (⌘O) and File ▸ Import… are the same door, so any of the three does it. A picker asks Choose a folder or card to scan for photos. Choose the card, or its DCIM folder, and press Scan. Adding a card to a library you already have has the steps and says where the copies go.

If ⌘O or File ▸ Import… does nothing:

  • A review or a copy is already on screen, in this window or in another window on the same library. Finish it, or press Cancel, and try again.
  • No library is open. The launch screen's File menu has neither item. Make a library there with Choose location…, or open one with Open existing library…, and scan the card from inside it.
  • Every window is closed. Both items are greyed out. Choose File ▸ New Window, and they come back.
  • You are on the edit page. They take you back to the cull page first, and the review opens there.

A library on a card or an external drive

A library that lives on a drive that is not plugged in is left out of the launch screen's list until the drive is back. That is the library, not a card to import; see A library that will not open, or will not keep adjustments.
