The bin rule, and the small things Vixlo removes

Empty bin is the one action that deletes photographs, but it is not the only thing in Vixlo that takes something away. This page covers the bin rule, which reads as if it should delete and does not; the two things called Forget; and two small things Vixlo removes that are not photographs. The one action that deletes a photograph covers Empty bin itself.

The bin rule

Bin rule… in the ⋯ menu at the end of the views line shows a rule for the library you have open, and the Library rules sheet on the launch screen sets the one new libraries start with, Ask when I finalise the cull until you choose another. The three rules are Keep the bin until I empty it myself, Ask when I finalise the cull and Empty the bin automatically when I finalise. Library rules covers them.

The rule is shown but not acted on, and a library does not keep it. Whichever rule is chosen, handing off writes its files into the folder you chose and stops there: it asks nothing about the bin and deletes nothing, although the sentences beside the last two rules describe such a step, and so does the bin's row in the Hand off dialog under either of them.

A rule set for an open library, even after Bin rule saved, lasts only until it closes, and so does the rule a new library's first session starts with from the wizard; a library you open again is back at ask when finalising. So frames are deleted only when you choose Empty bin… and confirm the count.

Two things called Forget, neither of which deletes a photograph

  • Forget… on a library's row on the launch screen removes the row from the list. Its sheet says: This only removes it from this list — nothing on disk changes. Deleting a library's files is something you do in the Finder.
  • Forget my taste… in the Proposals and criteria pane deletes what proposals have learned from you, never a photograph or a decision. It asks first, counting the decisions and libraries about to be forgotten. Learning from your decisions says what goes.

Two small things Vixlo removes that are not photographs

  • The empty folder of a library you cancelled. The new-library wizard makes the library when you press Create library, before anything is copied. Press Cancel on the review, Close on Couldn't scan that source, or Esc before a photograph has been copied, and Vixlo forgets that library and removes its folder, but only while the folder holds nothing except the library's own files and its empty Originals, Trash and Exports folders. A folder with anything else in it is never touched, and once one photograph has been copied in, no way out of the sheet forgets the library. Creating a library has the details.
  • An import's resume file. A small hidden file in Originals/ lets an interrupted import carry on where it stopped, and an import that goes through every file removes it. A card imported twice says what it is for.
