A card imported twice

You may import a card twice on purpose, to add a backup, or by accident. This page says what Vixlo does with what the library already has. Importing the same card again walks through each case on the sheet, and What the last panel says lists the sentences the app uses at the end of each run.

What the library already has

  • A file the library already holds counts as already imported and is not copied into the library again, whatever its name and wherever the card is mounted. It counts only while its copy is in Originals, unchanged; a deleted or replaced copy is offered as new again. With a backup chosen, each such file is also copied to the backup, so a card imported without one, or whose backup failed, can be imported again and then read safe to format (the steps).
  • A frame the library already has is not added a second time. When the copy an import has just made is the photograph an existing frame describes, Vixlo points that frame at the new copy. That covers a frame emptied from the bin or deleted in the Finder, one that still points at the card, and one whose photograph sits outside the library's folder. Its decision, rating, label, notes and group stay as you left them, and if it carries a decision, rating, label, keywords, caption or note, its XMP file is beside the new copy, written from the frame when there was none. Scanning a card again has the rules.
  • A card you formatted in the camera and shot again comes back under the same names. Its photographs are new frames, never taken for the first card's.
  • An interrupted import carries on from where it stopped, but only with copies it can prove are still the ones it made: the file on the card must still be the one it copied (its size, date and the bytes at its start and end), and the copy in the library still the file that was verified. While an import is unfinished Vixlo keeps a small hidden file in Originals/ for this.
