A proposed pair in Compare

When two frames of one burst are proposed against each other, one for the Take and one for the bin, Compare puts them side by side and a few keys answer both frames in one press. Read this page when you want to settle a burst that way, or when a key you pressed in Compare held one frame instead of two.

Getting a pair on screen

A pair is two undecided frames of one stack that the app has proposed against each other, one for the Take and one for the bin. Under the criteria Vixlo ships with, the burst rule proposes the take and leaves the rest of the burst to you, so the Reject to set against it has to come from somewhere else. Two things can supply one:

  • The rule. Switch on Propose the rest of a burst for the bin in the criteria pane, and each of the burst's other frames carries a proposed Reject.
  • Your taste. Nothing needs switching on. With Learn from my decisions and Leans on, as they are in a new library, your taste can lean towards Reject on a frame of the burst that the rule left alone, and the burst's take and that frame are a pair. Your taste says where a lean comes from.

A stack of look-alike frames can make a pair too, once the Look-alikes rule is on and your taste leans towards Take on the look-alike frame that rule left alone.

Press C on a frame of the burst to open Compare. Compare chooses the frame at the right itself, and it takes a frame you have already taken from the group the candidate was filed under at import, or else the sharpest other frame there, which is not always one from the burst. A pair is on screen only when that frame is the one the app proposed against the frame at the left; How Compare chooses and measures has the order. When it shows another frame, settle the burst in the Stack Resolver instead (Accepting a group, a session or a stack).

When the two frames on screen are a proposed pair, each caption carries its mark, proposed Take or proposed Reject, and a line under the pair says what separated them. For a Reject from the rule that is a measurement, such as Another frame of this burst measures sharper — subject 61. For a Reject that is your taste's lean it is the taste's own sentence, which begins In your taste:. A lean wears the same hollow mark as a rule's proposal; the reasons card that E opens on the left-hand frame says a lean when it is one.

The keys

KeyWhat it does
↩ or ⌘↩Accepts the pair as proposed: one Take, one Reject. One ⌘Z puts both frames back.
⇧↩Keeps the other one instead: the frame proposed as the Take goes to the bin and the one proposed for the bin becomes the Take. The message reads Kept the other one. It writes the two frames separately, so it takes two ⌘Z to undo.
H or ⇧HHolds both and writes neither proposal. The message reads Both held. One ⌘Z puts both frames back.

Each is one decision, so with auto-advance on it steps once, past both frames. Keys in Compare lists the rest of Compare's keys.

When the keys are live

These keys answer a pair only while Compare is on screen. Two things look like Compare and are not.

  • The contact sheet. Press G and Frames takes over, though Compare waits behind it. H then holds only the frame with the orange ring, ↩ does what it does in Frames, ⇧↩ and ⇧H do nothing, and ⌘↩ accepts a group (Accepting a group, a session or a stack). Press G again and the pair is live.
  • The Space full screen. Over Compare it shows one photograph. H there holds that photograph alone and leaves the pair's other frame undecided, and ↩, ⇧↩ and ⇧H decide nothing about the pair. Take the full screen down and the pair is live again.

Leaving Compare

Press C again, or Esc with nothing else open, and Single is back on the same frame. Clicking Single on the views line, or choosing View ▸ Single (⌘1), does the same. Leaving Compare lists the rest.

In Vixlo 0.1

One half of a pair can be your taste's lean rather than a rule's proposal, a lean on another frame of the burst, say. ↩ and ⌘↩ write only what the measured rules proposed, so with one such half they write one frame and the message reads 1 frame accepted; with two they write nothing and read Nothing to accept here. To settle that pair yourself, decide the frames with T, H and R, or hold both with H.
