Menu-bar shortcuts and gestures
Not everything on the cull page is a key from your map. Some shortcuts belong to the menu bar and are the same for everyone; many menu items wear a key from your map; and some things are done with the mouse or the trackpad. This page lists all three. The keys from your map are on Every key on the cull page.
The menu bar's own shortcuts
These live in the menu bar and are not in the keys map, so they cannot be changed in the Keyboard sheet. Each works whenever its menu item is enabled, whether or not the cursor is in a text field.
| Key | Menu item |
|---|---|
⌘1 | View ▸ Single, which also puts Compare away; see Keys in Compare |
⌘2 | View ▸ Frames |
⌘7 | View ▸ Gallery, and Leave Gallery |
⌘O | File ▸ Scan Source… (File ▸ Import… is the same action); see below |
⇧⌘E | File ▸ Edit takes — opens the edit page |
⌘E | File ▸ Hand off takes… |
⇧⌘P | View ▸ Proposals |
⇧⌘W | File ▸ Close Library |
Scan Source and Import
File ▸ Scan Source… (⌘O) and File ▸ Import… are one action, and it is the same as ⋯ ▸ Library… ▸ Scan a card or folder…. A panel asks you to Choose a folder or card to scan for photos. Choose one and press Scan, and Review this import opens for the library that is open. The review copies the photographs into that library's own Originals folder and verifies each copy; they reach the library's catalog only when you press Continue to culling. The card's own files are never added to the library where they lie.
- Cancel in the panel does nothing.
- From the edit page they take you back to the cull first, where the panel and the review are.
- While a review or a copy is on screen,
⌘Odoes nothing, in this window or in another window of the same library. - They are greyed out while a sheet is open, while the full screen or the gallery is up, and when every window of the library has been closed (File ▸ New Window brings them back).
- With no library open the File menu does not have them; the launch screen's Create library is where a first import starts.
The review tells a photograph it has seen from a new one by what is in the file, whatever its name and wherever the card is mounted, and a photograph the library already holds is not added a second time. A frame of yours that still points at the card, or at a file since deleted, is switched to the new verified copy when Vixlo can tell it is the same photograph, and keeps its decision, rating, label and notes. With a backup chosen, Start import also counts the files the library already holds, because the import checks each library copy and copies it to the backup. Importing a card a second time with a backup is how a first import without one can end safe to format. Adding a card to a library you already have describes the review, and What an import copies what happens when a card is imported again.
Menu items that wear your keys
The culling items in the Edit, View and Go menus wear the key from your map — Edit ▸ Take shows T, View ▸ Full Screen shows Space, Go ▸ Next shows → — so the menu and the keyboard can never disagree. Change a key in the Keyboard sheet and the menu item shows the new one.
- Edit: Undo, Redo, Take, Hold, Reject, Clear and Note…
- View: Full Screen, Side Panel, Zoom to 100%, Accept proposals, Accept all proposals, Confirm bets and Open Stack Resolver
- Go: Previous and Next
View ▸ Zoom to 100% carries the Z key and does what a tap of Z does, despite its name: it switches between fit and the focus check, which is twice the fitted size. View ▸ Focus Check is a short flash of the same zoom, since a menu item cannot be held. A few items change their title with what they would do: Full Screen reads Leave Full Screen while the photograph fills the screen, Gallery reads Leave Gallery, and Open Stack Resolver reads Close Stack Resolver while a stack is open.
Items with no key
Some items have no key at all: File ▸ Import…, File ▸ Export…, File ▸ Share…, View ▸ Focus Check, View ▸ Measure for proposals, Vixlo ▸ Models…, Vixlo ▸ Keyboard… and Help ▸ Keyboard Shortcuts.
The edit page's four items carry fixed keys of their own and work only on the edit page: Edit ▸ Copy Settings… (⇧⌘C), Edit ▸ Paste Settings (⇧⌘V), and two View items titled with what they are set to now, such as Grid: Off (G) and Canvas: Dark (B). See Keys on the edit page.
Mouse and trackpad
The map cannot write these as keys, so Your keys and the Keyboard sheet list them in words. The strip under the photograph is what the held map calls the roll.
| Gesture | Where | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Click a frame | Frames | Puts the ring on it. A click on the frame that already has the ring opens it in Single |
| Double-click a frame | Frames | Opens it in Single, even if you left the pass on Compare. On a collapsed stack's cover, opens the Stack Resolver for that stack instead |
| Click a session card | Frames, grouped by session cards | Opens Single on the session's first frame. Resolve gap on the card is a button of its own and shows Compare |
| Click a stack's count badge | Frames | Opens the Stack Resolver for that stack |
⌘-scroll or pinch | Frames | Bigger or smaller cells; the size is remembered with the library |
⌘-scroll or pinch | Single | Zoom about the pointer, up to eight times fit |
| Drag | Single, zoomed in | Move around the photograph |
| Double-click | Single | Fit ⇄ the focus check's magnification, at the point you clicked |
⌘-scroll | The strip | Bigger or smaller thumbnails |
| Click a thumbnail | The strip | Makes that frame the active one |
| Click the track | Under the strip | Scrolls the strip there and makes the frame under the click active |
