How an import ends
When an import has been through every file, its sheet ends on a last panel. Its title and first sentence are chosen by what actually happened, and only one of the endings says the card is safe to format. A run you cancel ends on Import stopped instead (If an import stops).
Import complete
- Import complete — safe to format with Every new file reached two independently verified copies. The card is safe to format in camera. Both destinations hold a verified copy of every file, and nothing on the card was left uncopied or unread. When the card also held files the library already had, it reads Every file on the card reached two independently verified copies — the 10 already in the library were found there unchanged and copied to the backup. The card is safe to format in camera.
- Import complete with Every file was copied and checksum-verified. Add a second independent copy before erasing the card. One destination, every file verified: the import succeeded, and the claim about the card is not made. With files the library already had it reads Every new file was copied and checksum-verified, and the 10 already in the library were found there unchanged. Add a second independent copy before erasing the card.
- Import complete with a sentence naming the videos and other files on the card that were not copied, and telling you to copy them yourself before formatting. Every photograph is in; the card is not safe to format. Clips and other files has it.
- Import complete with a sentence like Part of the card could not be read (1 folder) — nothing there has a copy, so the card is not safe to format. The Mac could not list a folder or read a file, so whatever is there has no copy (what that means). With a backup chosen and every photograph the scan could read protected, the panel opens Every photograph the scan could read reached two independently verified copies, but the card is not safe to format. With no backup it opens Every photograph the scan could read was copied and checksum-verified., and ends Add a second independent copy before erasing the card.
- Import complete with Your working library copied and verified completely — every photograph is safe to cull. Only the second copy failed; choose a different backup location before erasing the card.
- Import complete with Some files could not be verified — the card is not safe to format. and, when files failed, how many were left out of the library. Something failed in the working library itself, or a file the library already held has lost its copy there (see below). Keep the card and scan it again: the next import tries those files once more.
A panel can say more after its first sentence. Every ending except the first two can name what was not copied and say Part of the card could not be read, and any can say that frames were not merged (Frames from an earlier version of Vixlo). The last ending above, and Import stopped, can also say 1 file the library already had was missing or changed there. Scanning the card again offers it as new. The run found that library copy gone or altered, so the file is not in the library after all, and the panel cannot say every file is in.
The counts under the line read COPIED & VERIFIED, FAILED and PROTECTED: the new files that reached the library, the files that failed, and the files that have two verified copies. Two rows repeat the rules the panel was judged by: Verify two copies before "Safe to format" appears and Originals stay untouched.
What safe to format takes
Vixlo never formats a card. Safe to format is information for you to act on in the camera, and it is said only when all of these are true:
- Every file on the card has two verified copies, or is an exact duplicate of one that does. A file new to the library is copied to the working library and to the backup, each copy read back and compared by checksum. A file the library already holds has its library copy checked and is copied to the backup.
- The two copies are on different volumes. A volume is a disk, or a partition of one, that the Mac shows as a drive of its own. Two folders on one volume, or a single copy, do not earn it. Vixlo tells volumes apart, not the hardware under them, so two partitions of one physical disk pass although a failing disk would take both: put the backup on a separate drive.
- Nothing on the card is left that the import does not copy, and no part of it could not be read.
When a card is safe to format has the rule in full.
