Three ways to send takes out
Once a pass has settled, your takes leave Vixlo one of three ways. Each writes something different into a folder you choose, and none of them copies, moves or deletes a photograph. This page tells the three apart; the pages after it cover each one in full.
Which one you want
| You want | Use | It writes |
|---|---|---|
| Full-size files for a client, a lab or a website | Export | One JPEG or TIFF per take, a sidecar beside each, and a manifest |
| To develop the takes in Lightroom, Capture One or another editor | Hand off takes… | One XMP sidecar per take and decisions.json; no image files at all. Using a hand-off in your editor says how to put them beside your photographs |
| A folder of previews a client can look through | Share review | One 2048 px JPEG per take and a manifest |
All three send every frame marked Take in the library, not only the takes in the pass on screen. Holds, rejects and undecided frames are left out. Narrowing the pass, to one person, a search or a chip, does not narrow what goes out: the takes in the pass come first, in the pass's order, then every other take in the library, by file name. With no takes yet, each dialog says so and its button stays off.
Opening them
- On the cull page, the ⋯ menu at the right-hand end of the views line has an Export… row (its hint reads Writes real image files) and a Share… row (A 2048px review collection and a manifest).
- The File menu has the same two items, Export… and Share…, and above them Hand off takes… with
⌘E. - On the edit page, Export N sits at the right of the top panel, beside Before / after, and opens the same export dialog. N counts the takes in the pass on the edit page, and the button is off when the pass holds none. The dialog's own count, and the export, take every take in the library, so the two numbers differ while the pass is narrowed.
⌘E is Hand off takes…, which opens the hand-off dialog; Write to folder… in it then opens a folder picker and writes metadata for another editor. Vixlo's own edit page is Edit takes on the views line, or ⇧⌘E in the File menu. The two sit next to each other in the menu and do different things.
What the three have in common
- Each opens a dialog over the page with a count of your takes, then a folder picker, then a report of what was written with Reveal in Finder and Done.
- The picker lets you choose any folder on this Mac, or make a new one from the picker.
- None of them writes to a removable card or drive, and an external drive counts as one. Choose one and the dialog says so and writes nothing.
- None of them copies, moves, renames or deletes a photograph. Export and Share review read your originals to render from; Hand off takes never opens them at all. What each one writes can replace a file of the same name in the folder you choose, though, so never choose the folder your photographs are in. See Where files go.
- Export and Share review carry on past a frame they cannot render, and say so: the report's title ends — with gaps, and the manifest in the folder names each frame that failed and why. A hand-off works differently: it stops at the first sidecar that will not write and tells you how many are already in the folder. See Hand off takes to another editor.
- All three keep working when your account is read-only. Only culling and developing pause.
