The cull page
Open a library and Vixlo lands on the cull page: one photograph in the middle, the pass under it, and the library's own context down the left. This page names each part so that the rest of this section can point at them.
Top to bottom
The window is a title bar, then the side panel on the left, and beside it the header, the photograph and three bands.
The title bar runs across the whole window. At the left are the Vixlo mark and name and a small CULL chip saying which page you are on. In the centre is the library's name over the path of its folder; an Earlier library, which has no folder of its own, shows a count there instead, such as 3 cameras · 25 frames. Click the name and the library menu drops down under it — the same menu as ⋯ ▸ Library…. At the right, Originals read-only and Saved with a tick. If a decision could not reach the disk, Not saved stands there in red instead, and the same words appear on the views line, in front of Edit takes (Not saved, in red). Drag the bar to move the window; double-clicking its empty area does what your Mac's own title bar setting says.
The side panel is the pass's own context. A narrow rail holds three pane buttons — Groups, Organise and filter, Proposals and criteria — and a body beside it shows the pane you chose, under the search field (⌘K). At the foot of the rail are the account button (a circled person) and, under it, Your keys, the list of shortcuts. Press [ to fold the body down to the rail and back, or drag the panel's right edge to resize it. The panes are covered in The Groups pane, Organise and filter and Proposals and criteria.
Under the pane are two standing facts about this library. The first says where its photographs are — Photographs copied in when every one is inside the library's own folder, Originals referenced when every one is outside it, a count such as 412 copied in · 36 referenced for a mix, or Photographs not located when Vixlo has no location for any. An Earlier library reads Library in memory, and one with no photographs yet reads Nothing imported yet. Under it, in a library with photographs, is Decisions are metadata · originals stay untouched; with none, it reads Originals stay untouched. The second is the free space on the library's disk, such as 412 GB free, with Originals stay untouched under it, when Vixlo can measure it.
A frame is referenced when its file is outside the library's folder. Scan its card into the library again and Vixlo copies it in, keeping its decisions (Adding a card to a library you already have).
The header sits directly above the photograph and is about that one frame and nothing else. Left to right: the state pill — the decision's glyph and word on its coloured ground, or a circle and Undecided in an outline with no ground — then the file name, the import state (New, Previously imported or Possible duplicate; see The import-state chip), what the picture is of (a scene label, once Vixlo has read the library for search), the session and its day, and — when the app proposes something about the frame — one sentence in orange saying so. At the trailing end: Keyword, which opens a small panel for keywords and a caption, then the heart, five stars and the EXIF line. As the window narrows the header puts its phrases down one at a time; the file name never goes.
The canvas is the photograph, and nothing drawn over it. In Frames it is the contact sheet instead. C swaps the photograph for Compare, two photographs side by side, and C again swaps it back. See Single and Frames.
Under the photograph are three bands, the same in both views: the pass line, the views line, and the strip over its track.
The pass line
The band directly under the photograph says where you are and holds the three decisions.
At the left is a dot in the pass's own colour, the pass's name, and your position in it: ● the library 12 of 37. On the last frame the line adds the last of 37 frames. While the bin holds something and you are looking at it, this band also carries the bin's count and, when Vixlo can measure the files, their size, then Restore all and Empty bin… (Reject and the bin).
At the right are the three decisions as buttons — R ✕ Reject · H — Hold · T ✓ Take — each wearing the key that does the same thing. The one this frame already carries is drawn on its own coloured ground. All three dim when the library has no photograph in it. See Take, Hold, Reject.
In an empty pass of a library that has photographs, the three buttons do not dim. Single shows the library's first photograph, and the buttons and the decision keys decide it. When a pass is empty says how to tell.
The views line
The next band holds what narrows the pass, and the two doors out.
- Single · Frames — the two views of the same pass. See Single and Frames.
- The pass chips — All · Undecided · Takes · Holds · Rejects, one at a time. Each count is the number of frames that chip would open on, with your other narrowing applied. While a proposal pass is open, Takes and Holds are greyed out with no count: a decided frame carries no proposal, as their tooltip says.
- The proposals switch and, when it is on, the word PROPOSED with three chips beside it. See What a proposal is.
- Chips for a person, a place, a rating, Favourites or a colour label, or a search you have narrowed to, each with its own
×. - ★ ▾ and ● ▾ — the two menus that narrow the pass to one rating, to your favourites, or to one colour label. See Stars, favourites and colour labels.
- Edit takes (6) ↗ — leaves the cull for the edit page with your takes (
⇧⌘E). - ⋯ — everything that is not culling.
The ⋯ menu
⋯ at the end of the views line holds the library menu, the frame's colour label, favourite and note, auto-advance, full screen, the keys, Export, Share, the bin rule and Photo sources…. The ⋯ menu lists every row.
The strip and the track
The bottom band is the strip: every frame in the pass as a row of small cells, the frame you are on ringed, over a thin track that is the whole pass at once. See Moving through the pass.
