The Groups pane
Groups, the side panel's first pane, shows the shoot as a tree in the grouping you have chosen, with the library's people, places and saved searches under it. Jump to a group here, or narrow the pass to a person, a place or a saved search with one click; each leaves a chip on the views line.
The side panel
The side panel sits to the left of the photograph, with a narrow rail down its left edge. At the rail's head are three pane buttons — Groups, Organise and filter, Proposals and criteria — and at its foot the account button and Your keys. The pane's body is beside it. [ collapses the body to the rail and brings it back; so does clicking the pane you are already on. Drag the body's right edge to resize it. The width, the open pane and whether it is collapsed are remembered with the library.
Above whichever pane is open is the search field, with ⌘K at its end (see Search). Under every pane are two standing facts about the library. The first says where its photographs are, over Decisions are metadata · originals stay untouched: Photographs copied in when every frame's file is inside the library's folder, Originals referenced when every one is outside it, a count such as 12 copied in · 3 referenced for a mix, and Photographs not located when Vixlo has no location for any. An Earlier library has no folder to measure against and reads Library in memory; its decisions are kept all the same (see Opening and switching). A library with nothing in it reads Nothing imported yet. The second is the free space on the library's disk, over Originals stay untouched.
In this frame
On the Single canvas, a frame with people in it opens the pane with In this frame: a close-up of each face, for checking eyes without zooming. See In this frame.
The axis header
The first line names the two axes the tree is built on: CAMERA BODY → SESSION, or, under Session cards, SESSION CARDS → NO SECOND LEVEL. They are the same two axes Frames is grouped by. Under Capture date the tree goes a rung further than the sheet, opening each month into its days.
All frames
The row under it is All frames: the pass's frame count and session count — 451 frames · 6 sessions — a thin bar showing how much of the pass is taken, and the ratio itself at the right, 12/451, in green once there is a take.
Click All frames to put your narrowings down at once: every chip goes and the state goes back to All. An open proposal pass stays, because it is the app's suggestion rather than one of your narrowings; its own chip on the views line puts it down. The row is lit while no chip is up and the state is All, whether or not a proposal pass is open.
The tree
Under All frames, one row per group at the first level — each camera body, say. A first-level row starts open, showing the groups under it: the second level's, when one is on, and for Capture date the days of each month. A branch that holds the frame you are on opens too. Every row carries its name, a bar of how much of it is taken, and the ratio: 2/8. Hover the ratio to read it in words: 2 takes of 8 frames. The bar is grey while nothing in the group is taken, amber part-way, and green when every frame is.
Click a row and the frame you are on moves to that group's first frame, in whichever view you are in. A row only moves you; it narrows nothing. The highlighted row marks where you are, not what is on screen. The chevron is its own click: it expands or collapses a branch without moving you.
Proposals
What the app proposes is its suggestion, not your mark, so it sits in its own block: the criteria link, and one line on where proposals stand — Off — the measurements are kept, for instance, or, once there is enough to count, how often the proposals agree with your decisions. The block only reports: the switch that turns proposals on is on the views line, and Confirm bets and Accept all are at the foot of the Proposals and criteria pane. See What a proposal is.
People
A circle per person the library has seen at least twice, showing their clearest face, most frames first; a name under a named person, the frame count under the rest. A person whose faces are all tiny, under about a fortieth of a frame's width, gets no circle. Click a circle and the pass is that person's frames, on top of whatever else is narrowing it; a chip on the views line says so. Click the circle again, or the chip's ×, to put the person down. Right-click a circle for Name this person… (Rename… once it has a name) or Not a face — hide.
While the scan runs and no circle has appeared, the section reads Finding faces · 12 of 127. When the scan has finished and nobody has been seen twice, it reads Nobody seen twice yet. Before anything has been read it reads Nobody yet. Faces are found on this Mac as a library opens, and grouped by look. Naming a person and When the grouping is wrong cover naming and corrections.
Places
When the library holds at least one place or journey, the pane gains a PLACES section: one row per place, and a row per journey underneath. Click a row and the pass narrows to its frames, with a chip on the views line. Location data alone does not draw the section, since a few scattered frames make neither, and most libraries have no location data at all. Places and journeys says what makes a place or a journey, how each is named, and the one setting that sends anything off your Mac.
Saved searches
This section appears once you have saved a search. Each row is a name and a live count of what the search matches right now. Click a row to open a pass over those frames, in Frames whichever view you were in; a row that reads 0 does nothing when clicked, since there is no pass over no frames. Right-click for Rename… or Delete. Deleting asks nothing and cannot be undone. How to save one is on Recent and saved searches.
