The browser will not open from the app
Several buttons in Vixlo open a page of the website in your browser. On a Mac whose browser will not launch, each of them says so and leaves you a way through. This page is for that moment.
The buttons that open the website
- In Settings, under Account: Account page, and Subscribe (or Update card).
- The Account page link on the notice under the title bar, on the cull page and the launch screen, when a notice is showing (a trial's countdown, complimentary access in its last week, a failed payment, or read-only).
- Manage account… in the account popover, from the circled person at the foot of the side panel's rail on the cull page.
- Vixlo Account… in the Vixlo menu.
- Create an account on the sign-in card.
- Install… on the Max quality row of the Export dialog, which opens darktable's download page.
When the browser fails, every one of them copies the address to the clipboard and says so. Where it says so differs.
What you see
If the browser cannot be launched — no default browser is set, the one that is set fails to open, or the Mac's link handling is broken — Vixlo first copies the address to the clipboard, then says: Couldn't open your browser — The link is on the clipboard.
Where it says it depends on the button and the page you are on:
- On the cull page, the notice's Account page link and the account popover show it as a message in the window, the same message every other message there uses. The popover is on the cull page only, and the edit page has neither the popover nor the notice.
- On the launch screen, which has the notice but no popover, the notice's Account page link shows a plain alert.
- The Vixlo menu and the sign-in card show a plain alert too.
- The two Settings buttons and the Export dialog's Install… row say it somewhere you may not look. The caution below says where.
Two of the places put the message out of sight.
- In Settings, the message is a red banner at the very bottom of the Settings window, below Diagnostics, well away from the Account section you pressed. If nothing seemed to happen after Account page, Subscribe or Update card, scroll down.
- In the Export dialog, on the cull page and the edit page alike, the Install… row shows its message behind the dialog's dark backdrop, where it is all but invisible, and it goes after about four seconds. Nothing seems to happen, but the address is already on the clipboard: paste it into a browser as below.
What to do
- Open any browser you have.
- Click the address bar, paste, and press
↩.
The clipboard holds only the address — it is cleared before the link is put on it — so the paste always lands cleanly, whatever is wrong with the Mac's own browser setting. The addresses are the account page and the sign-up page of the portal named at the bottom of Settings' Account section, and darktable.org's install page for the Export dialog's Install… row.
To stop it happening, choose a default browser in the Mac's System Settings. Vixlo asks macOS to open the link and uses whichever browser macOS names.
