The Account section

Account is the first section of the Settings window: one line saying who is signed in and where the account stands, and the app's own buttons for asking the website again, opening your account page and signing out. Come here just after paying, or when a notice under the title bar says something has changed.

The line and the word

The card starts with the email address of the account, in bold, and a sentence under it saying where the account stands. At the right-hand end a coloured dot and one word say the same thing shorter: Trial (orange), Subscribed or Complimentary (green), Past due (red), Read-only (amber), or Signed out. The app calls the website the portal, so that is the word in the sentences quoted below.

Each signed-in state's sentence, exactly as the page shows it. The dates are examples: the app writes a date in the form your Mac's region uses, so on a US-region Mac 12 Jan 2027 reads Jan 12, 2027.

WordSentence
TrialTrial, ends 12 Jan 2027.
SubscribedSubscribed, renews 12 Jan 2027. — or just Subscribed. when the website has not said a date. A subscription you have cancelled on the website still reads renews here until its paid period ends; this Mac is not told in advance
ComplimentaryComplimentary access until 12 Jan 2027. — or Complimentary access, no end date.
Past dueThe last payment failed. Update your card on the account page; the app keeps working until 12 Jan 2027.
Read-only, after a trialThe trial has ended. Subscribe on the account page to keep culling and developing.
Read-only, after a subscriptionThe subscription is canceled. Subscribe again on the account page to keep culling and developing.
Read-only, after complimentary accessComplimentary access ended 12 Jan 2027. Subscribe on the account page to keep culling and developing. — or Your complimentary access has ended. and the same second sentence
Read-only, licence not renewedThe licence could not be renewed. Sign in again, or check the subscription on the account page.

Two things can be added to the end of that sentence. If this Mac's clock is more than five minutes earlier than the latest time the website has reported, the line adds This Mac's clock is earlier than the portal's; dates are judged against the portal's time. And if the last check did not succeed, the line adds Last check: and the reason, such as Could not reach the portal: and what went wrong. Nothing changes in the app when a check fails like this: the last answer it has stands.

One kind of refusal is different. If this Mac has been removed on the account page, or the website says the session has ended — as it does once the account is deleted — the check signs this Mac out: the sign-in card covers the library window, and this card reads Not signed in. Your libraries are not touched.

When nobody is signed in, the card says Not signed in where the email would be, with the word Signed out at the right, and under it: Sign in from the window that appears when Vixlo opens, with the email and password of your Vixlo account. None of the buttons below are shown.

The buttons

The Account section on a trial, with Subscribe at the left of the row

Subscribe is shown only when there is something to subscribe for: on a trial, when the app is read-only, and in the last seven days of complimentary access that has an end date. When a payment has failed it reads Update card instead. Either way it opens your account page in your browser; paying, and putting in a new card, always happen there, never inside the app. When a payment fails walks through the card.

Refresh asks the website now for a fresh answer about the account. While it is asking, the button reads Checking…. Press it when you do not want to wait, for example just after paying or after redeeming an invite code.

The app also asks by itself — at launch, when the Mac wakes and once a day while it runs — but only when a check is due: a day after the last successful one, or sooner if the licence it holds needs renewing. A launch or wake within a day of the last successful check, with a licence that is not due for renewal, asks nothing. Only a check that succeeds starts that day, so after an automatic check that failed, the next launch or wake asks again.

Account page opens your account page on the website, where Macs are removed, invite codes are entered and the subscription is managed. See The account page on the website.

Sign out tells the website, if it can reach it, so that this Mac's place on the account is freed; then, answer or no answer, it removes what kept this Mac signed in and the licence the website sent, and the sign-in card covers the library window. Signed out without a connection, this Mac keeps its place on the account until you remove it on the account page. Your libraries are not touched; they are files on this Mac, never part of the account.

Your answers

Under the buttons, Your answers repeats the three things you were asked when you created the account: You shoot (for example Weddings & events or A bit of everything), Your keys (Vixlo, Lightroom or Photo Mechanic) and Starting look (The file as shot, Provia, Velvia, Astia, Classic Chrome or Acros). A question you skipped is left out rather than shown empty; if you skipped all three, the block is not there at all.

The line under them says what they are for: Answered on your account page, and read here. Change them there. These are shown, not applied: the keys you cull with are set on the Keyboard sheet (Vixlo ▸ Keyboard…), not by this row. See The keys preset and The three presets.

The answers are read from the website only when you sign in on this Mac, never on a check. If you change one with its Change link on the account page, the new answer shows here after you next sign in on this Mac; Refresh does not bring it across.

The portal line

The last line of the card, in small type, reads Portal: and the address of the website this copy of Vixlo talks to, even when nobody is signed in. On the tester builds of Vixlo 0.1 it reads https://dev.vixlo.app; a copy built without a tester address reads https://vixlo.app.

When the browser cannot open

Subscribe, Update card and Account page all open a page in your default browser. If it cannot be opened, Vixlo copies the address to the clipboard and shows the banner at the foot of the page: Couldn't open your browser — The link is on the clipboard. Paste it into any browser's address bar. See The browser will not open from the app.
