What the last panel says
The last panel of an import says what actually happened, and only one of its cases tells you the card is safe to format. This page lists the cases, what the counts mean, and what happens to a file that did not verify. A card imported twice covers a second import of the same card. When a card is safe to format is the rule behind them.
The cases
The last panel is chosen by what happened, never by a hope:
- Import complete — safe to format, with Every new file reached two independently verified copies. The card is safe to format in camera. It is the only case that says so. When the card also held files the library already had, it reads Every file on the card reached two independently verified copies — the 10 already in the library were found there unchanged and copied to the backup. The card is safe to format in camera.
- Import complete, with Every file was copied and checksum-verified. Add a second independent copy before erasing the card. One destination, every file verified. With files the library already had, it reads Every new file was copied and checksum-verified, and the 10 already in the library were found there unchanged. Add a second independent copy before erasing the card.
- Import complete, with a sentence naming what was not copied, for example 3 videos and 2 other files on the card were not copied — copy them yourself before formatting the card. Every photograph is in; the card is not safe to format. With a backup, the sentence before it reads Every photograph reached two independently verified copies, but the card is not safe to format. Copying them yourself does not clear this.
- Import complete, with Your working library copied and verified completely — every photograph is safe to cull. Only the second copy failed; choose a different backup location before erasing the card.
- Import complete, with Some files could not be verified — the card is not safe to format. and how many files that did not verify were left out of the library. If a file the library already had was gone or changed when the import checked it, a second sentence says so: 1 file the library already had was missing or changed there. Scanning the card again offers it as new.
- Import stopped, after Cancel import, saying how many files were copied and how many were left out, and that the card is not safe to format. If you cancel while files the library already had are being copied to the backup, it says how far that got: 100 of the 640 files already in the library were copied to the backup before the import stopped — the card is not safe to format. Import the card again with the backup to finish.
Two more sentences can follow the case's own. When part of the card could not be read, the panel carries Part of the card could not be read (1 folder) — nothing there has a copy, so the card is not safe to format. When the library has frames from an earlier version of Vixlo that are not this card's photographs, any panel, even safe to format, carries 2 frames an earlier version of Vixlo catalogued on this card do not match the photographs now at their places (capture time, camera and settings), so they were not merged: they keep your decisions and still point at the card. When both are there, the unreadable sentence comes first. The review shows the unmatched sentence before you start, in a row headed Frames that do not match this card; Scanning a card again explains it.
In the Import complete case where every file reached the library and none failed to verify, the card can hold files the import does not copy, or part the scan could not read. If the photographs have not all reached a second copy (with one destination, the usual first import of such a card), the panel ends with Add a second independent copy before erasing the card. Its first sentence then reads Every photograph was copied and checksum-verified., with the word other added when a photograph was among the files not copied, and the scan could read when part of the card could not be read. A stopped import, a run with files that did not verify and a run whose backup failed end on the sentences above instead, with no such line, though their photographs are not all protected either.
Under the sentence, COPIED & VERIFIED counts the new files that reached the working library, out of the new files in this import. FAILED counts the files whose copy failed on either destination. PROTECTED counts the files that reached two verified copies, out of every file in the import, the ones the library already had included. When an import only copies files to a backup, COPIED & VERIFIED reads 0/0 and PROTECTED is the count to read.
When an import stops or a file does not verify
Continue to culling adds only the frames whose copy in the library verified. A file that did not is not in the library:
- The card is not safe to format. The only copy of those files is on it.
- Scanning the card again offers exactly those files as new, and importing them completes the library.
- A run that verified nothing adds nothing. Continue to culling then just closes the sheet.
If an import stops shows the panel after Cancel import.
