Measuring a library

Proposals are made from numbers Vixlo reads off every frame, once. Read this page when the Groups pane says Measuring or Not measured yet, when no marks have appeared, or when the Proposals are ready sheet opens.

Measured once, then ready

The Groups pane's proposals block while a library is being measured

A library is measured as it opens, in the background. Proposals appear only when the whole library has been measured, and a shoot you have opened before is ready the moment it opens. The Groups pane's proposals block says which of five things is true: Off — the measurements are kept; Not measured yet — View → Measure for proposals; Measuring 412 of 1,247 with a progress line; Every proposal accepted; or the agreement score once there is one. A frame that can never be read goes on the look-at-these list rather than holding everything else back. Measuring decides nothing.

Photographs you add later, by scanning a card or folder into the open library, are measured the same way. Until they have been, the block reads Measuring again, counting the whole library, and no frame carries a proposal.

Starting it by hand

The View menu, with Proposals, Measure for proposals, Accept all proposals and Confirm bets

If the block reads Not measured yet — View → Measure for proposals, or a library's measurement never ran, choose View ▸ Measure for proposals. A message says Measuring for proposals with how many frames are still to read, and the block counts them off. Choose it on a library with nothing left to read and the message says Every frame is measured instead.

Measuring again

A frame is measured once. Only two things make Vixlo read it again: its own file changed on disk, or a new build of the app changed the way it measures, which re-reads the whole library rather than mixing two instruments' numbers. A frame that could not be read is tried again the next time the library opens, rather than remembered as a failure. A frame whose file is replaced by a new copy counts as changed. Scanning a card into the library again points a frame that was left pointing at the card at its new copy inside the library (Scanning a card again), and the copy has a date of its own, so the frame is read once more the next time the library opens.

The Proposals are ready sheet

The Proposals are ready sheet: three counts, what was measured, and three answers

The first time a library's measurement finishes, one sheet says what was found, headed Proposals are ready: the counts of proposed takes, proposed rejects and frames to look at, a row headed By measurement saying what was read on this Mac, a row headed Nothing has been decided, and — when some frames could not be read — a row counting those. Its three buttons are three real answers: Turn proposals off, Review in Survey (which opens Frames), and Accept all. It is shown once per library.

In Vixlo 0.1

The sheet's three counts include your taste's bets and leans, which are there from the start, but its Accept all writes only what the measured rules proposed. It can write fewer frames than the counts add up to; the message afterwards says how many it wrote. The By measurement row says Nothing about your taste is in these yet, which is not true while Learn from my decisions and Leans are both on, as they are in a new library. Your taste says what each switch does. To write the bets and leans too, open a proposal chip on the views line afterwards and use Take all or Reject all there, or use Confirm bets for the bets alone. Accepting, or deciding for yourself has them.
