When a face model arrives or goes

Adding or removing a face model changes how People groups, and the first open of each library afterwards reads every frame again. This page covers what you see while it reads, what is kept, and what to check once it has finished. Face models says how to tell which grouping your Mac uses.

The first open afterwards

Vixlo looks for a model as a library opens, so a model added while a library is open waits. Close the library with File ▸ Close Library (⇧⌘W) and open it again.

The first time a library opens on a Mac whose grouping differs from the one that grouped its faces, the scan reads every frame again. The section's header counts n of N, and you can cull while it runs. Each library does this on its own first open; a library you do not open stays as it was. Removing a model has the same effect: it shows the next time a library opens.

This scan is not like the one after an import, where the circles stay as they were while the new frames are read. Here the app empties every face first, so until the count reaches its end the circles have nothing in them: no picture, a 0 under each unnamed one, only the name under a named one. Clicking a circle opens an empty pass, In this frame shows nothing, and the menu on a frame in Frames reads No one recognised in this frame. Names are kept, and the circles fill in again, regrouped, when the count finishes. Leave naming and corrections until then.

What is kept, and what can move

Your names are kept, and so are your corrections, with one rare exception below: the library remembers each Not Maya, This is Maya, Not the same and Not a face — hide and applies it again. Unnamed circles are the scan's to regroup, so their number and make-up can change: that is what the model is for. Faces and people has the rest, and Naming a person says why a name outranks the scan.

A name or a correction is recorded against a face's number among the faces read in its frame, and a face too small for the grouping to read has no number. A face model reads smaller faces than grouping by look does (see the scan), so when People moves between a model and grouping by look, a frame with one very small face can number its faces differently. A record made there can then sit on a different face: a stranger in the background filed under Maya, say. The person is still named, and frames with no face that small are not affected.

After a model arrives or goes, look through the frames of each person you named and the frames where you made a correction. What sets it right depends on the record:

  • A name, or This is Maya. A wrong face filed under Maya comes off with Not Maya on its frame. If her own face went with it, This is Maya on the same frame pins the largest face that is not already hers, so look at the frame first.
  • Not Maya. Her own face can end up cut from her, and the face you took away can come back. Look at the frame, and take care with both buttons. Not Maya takes every face in the frame that she holds off her and withdraws any This is Maya on them. This is Maya is on the frame's menu only while none of her faces is in the frame, and it pins the largest face in the frame that is not already hers. So when the stranger's face is back on her, the menu has Not Maya alone. Choose it: it takes the stranger off her and leaves her own face alone, since that was no longer hers, and This is Maya is then offered. With neither face hers it pins the larger of the two, so it brings her own face back only when that is the larger one. If the stranger's is the larger, it is the stranger's that is pinned, and the app has no way to pin hers.
  • Not the same. It is made on the row under the circles, not on a frame. If Are these the same person? comes back for two circles you kept apart, click Not the same again.
  • Not a face — hide. Nothing sets this one right, because a hide cannot be taken back. If it landed on a real face, that face stays out of People: no circle, no close-up in In this frame, and This is Maya never pins it. The thing you meant to hide may be drawn as a circle again; hide that circle.

When the grouping is wrong covers Not Maya and This is Maya.
