What lives outside the library

Most of what Vixlo knows about a shoot is in the shoot's own folder, which What a library is on disk walks through. A few things are about you or this Mac instead, and they are kept outside every library. You need this page when you copy a library folder to another Mac and find that your keys did not come with it, or when you want to know what Vixlo keeps that is not part of any shoot.

Where they are​

Two folders of Vixlo's own, Vixlo and Vixlo7, under Library/Application Support in your home folder. Each thing below is a file in one of the two, and none of them is in a library's folder.

What is in them​

  • Your keys — the keyboard preset and any key you changed, in Vixlo. See Changing a key.
  • Your export presets — the delivery recipes you saved by name, so they outlive any one shoot, in Vixlo7. See Export presets, renaming and watermarks; the file's own keys are on Writing a preset by hand.
  • What Vixlo has learned from your decisions — a log of numbers and codes, with no pixels and no person's name, which every library you open adds to, in Vixlo. It names each decided photograph by a fingerprint of its contents. A photograph the library has no fingerprint for is named by its frame's id instead. For a frame copied in from a card or a folder that id is itself a fingerprint of its contents; for one an older build scanned in, it is the path the file had when it was scanned.   • The models you fetched — for search by words, for faces, and for spot clean, in the Models folder inside Vixlo. Vixlo ▸ Models… lists them. See Face models.

The list of libraries​

The list of libraries the launch screen shows is also the app's own, and it lives in Vixlo7, beside the stores of the Earlier libraries. Forget edits that list and nothing in the library's folder.

Because the list is kept here, a library folder you copy to another Mac is not on that Mac's list. Open it there with Open existing library… and from then on the list knows where it is.

What travels with a library instead​

The folder carries the photographs, the XMP file beside each one you have touched, the names you gave in People, your saved searches, the simulations you saved and the criteria you set. Move the folder and those move with it. What a library is on disk says which is which.
