Keys in Compare

Compare puts the frame you are on beside the best other frame from the same moment, so you can choose between them. This page lists every key it answers, the three that exist only for a proposed pair, and the ways back to Single.

Opening Compare

Press C. From Single, the one photograph becomes two; from Frames, you leave the contact sheet for Compare. The frame you were on is the one on the left. C is in your map, so it is yours to change. Review holds in the Hand off dialog and Resolve gap on a session card open Compare too; Compare has both.

What Compare shows

Compare: the candidate on the left, the best frame from the same session on the right, and the line under them

The left card, headed CANDIDATE, is the frame you are on, and the decision keys act on it. The right card is headed BEST IN THIS SESSION when Compare found another frame in the group the candidate was filed under at import, and CLOSEST ELSEWHERE when it had to look outside it; with nothing else to compare against it reads Nothing else to compare against. Under the cards is one line, only ever a reading: Measured from the frames · no decision is changed automatically; on a proposed pair it also prints the pair's three keys. The heading's buttons, Linked (or Independent) and 100% (or Fit), have no key; see Looking closer.

The keys

The decision keys act on the left-hand frame.

KeyWhat it does in Compare
TTake
RReject, to the bin
UClear to undecided
HHold; on a proposed pair, hold both
0 – 5Rate, or clear the rating
NA note on this decision
⌘Z ⇧⌘ZUndo and redo
EThe reasons card, when the frame carries a proposal; a second press closes it
← →Previous and next frame in the pass. The left card changes, and Compare chooses a new right card for it
AAuto-advance on or off
CBack to Single, on the same frame. See Getting back to Single
EscCloses the nearest open thing, such as the reasons card or the Stack Resolver; with nothing open, back to Single
SpaceThe frame full screen: one photograph, not the pair. Space or Esc brings you back to Compare
[The side panel folds to its rail, and back
⌘KOpen search
↩Without a pair on screen: open or close the stack the frame is in, or confirm the frame's own proposal. With a pair: see below
⌘↩With a proposed pair on screen, accept the pair, as ↩ does; with no pair, accept what is proposed on the left-hand frame alone
⌥⌘↩ ⇧⌘↩Accept all proposals; Confirm bets. The same as everywhere
GFrames; G again returns to Compare

Two keys do nothing you can see here. Z, held or tapped, changes nothing, because Compare's zoom is its own 100% button. ⇧T works only inside an open stack.

Compare is still a place to cull: every decision key works, and the pass line, the views line and the strip are Single's. It lacks Single's row under the photograph, the full-size zoom, and In this frame.

A proposed pair

The line under a proposed pair: the measurement, the disclaimer and the three keys

A pair is two undecided frames from one stack, one proposed as the Take and the other for the bin, with Compare showing both. It comes from the burst rule when Propose the rest of a burst for the bin is on (The nine rules), or from your taste leaning on frames of the burst (Your taste).

When one is on screen, three keys answer it:

KeyWhat it does
↩Accept the pair as proposed: one Take, one Reject, one undo step
⇧↩Keep the other one: the frame proposed for the bin becomes the Take and the other goes to the bin
H or ⇧HHold both, writing neither proposal. The message reads Both held

⌘↩ accepts the pair too, exactly as ↩ does: it writes the measured proposals of these two frames and nothing else.

Each is one decision, so with auto-advance on it moves you past both frames. One ⌘Z puts back ↩ and H; ⇧↩ writes its two frames separately, so it takes two ⌘Z to undo. With no pair on screen, H holds the one frame, and ⇧↩ and ⇧H do nothing. While Vixlo is read-only, H and ⇧H on a pair hold nothing but say they did, and a ⌘Z then undoes something else; see When Vixlo is read-only. A proposed pair in Compare covers how a pair comes about and what its keys do.

In Vixlo 0.1

↩ and ⌘↩ write only what a measured rule proposed, never a lean. When one half of the pair is your taste's lean they write the other half alone and the message reads 1 frame accepted; when both halves are leans they write nothing and the message reads Nothing to accept here. ⇧↩ and H act on any pair, so to settle one with a lean in it, use them or decide the frames yourself with T, H and R.

When Compare is not on screen

The pair's keys answer only while Compare is on screen. Two things leave Compare waiting unseen:

  • Behind the contact sheet, after C then G: H holds only the one frame, ↩ does what it does in Frames, and ⇧↩ and ⇧H do nothing. C in Frames brings Compare back.
  • Under the Space full screen: H holds only the one photograph, and ↩, ⇧↩ and ⇧H decide nothing about the pair. Space or Esc takes the full screen down. See Keys in full screen and the gallery.

Getting back to Single

Each of these shows Single on the frame you are on:

  • C again. It is a toggle; a key held down toggles once, not over and over.
  • Esc, once nothing nearer is open. The Your keys panel, the account panel, a menu, the reasons card, the criteria pane and the Stack Resolver each take one press first.
  • The Single segment on the views line, or View ▸ Single (⌘1), from Compare or from Frames.
  • In Frames, a click on the frame that already has the ring.

Two more show Single on a frame that need not be the one you were on: in Frames, a double-click on a frame (a double-click on a stack's cover opens the Stack Resolver instead), and a click on a session card, which shows that session's first frame.

G alone does not leave Compare: G and then G or Esc returns you to the canvas you left, which is Compare. Compare has the account from the cull page's side.
