Your first pass
Your library is open on the cull page. This page is the shortest route through a shoot: look, decide, undo, narrow, and hand the takes on. Everything here uses Vixlo's own keys; The three presets covers the Lightroom and Photo Mechanic ones.
A library you have just imported opens with a dialog headed Source scan complete over it; press Review options to close it (what it is). On a Mac with sessions from the earlier build, a second dialog, Decisions from the earlier build, covers the cull page until it is answered. Read that page before you answer it; either answer ends the offer for good.
What is on screen
A library opens in Single, one photograph at a time, with the All chip on and the pass line naming the pass the library.
- The title bar at the top: the Vixlo mark, a
CULLchip, the library's name over its path, Originals read-only and Saved with a tick. Every decision is written the moment you make it. - The side panel on the left: three panes on its rail, Groups, Organise and filter and Proposals and criteria, a search field above them, and at the foot the account button and Your keys.
- The header above the photograph: the state pill, the file name, the import-state chip (New on every frame of a library you made: The import-state chip), the session and its day, Keyword, the heart, five stars and the EXIF line.
- The canvas: the photograph, with a chevron at each side. A row under it says where the frame came from and carries Focus check and Develop.
- The pass line under it: the pass's name and your place in it, the library and 1 of 24 on a fresh library, and at the right the three decisions as buttons, R ✕ Reject · H — Hold · T ✓ Take, each wearing its key.
- The views line: Single · Frames, the pass chips All · Undecided · Takes · Holds · Rejects with their counts, the Proposals switch, the ★ and ● menus (rating or favourite, colour label), Edit takes (0) ↗ and ⋯. A Not saved badge joins them if a decision did not reach the disk.
- The strip along the bottom: every frame of the pass as a row of small cells, with the track under it, a thin band that shows the whole pass at once.
Looking
- Press
→and←to step through the pass. The strip keeps the frame you are on ringed. - Click any cell in the strip to jump to it, or press and drag along the track to scrub.
- Press
Spaceto see the photograph full screen; the arrows and the decision keys still work, and a line at the bottom-left says Space or Escape returns. - Hold
Zto check focus at twice the fitted size; let go and the view is back.
Deciding
| Key | Decision |
|---|---|
T | Take |
H | Hold, for a frame you want to come back to |
R | Reject, which puts the frame in the bin |
U | Back to Undecided |
The pass line's three buttons do the same as the keys. Auto-advance is on to begin with, so every decision moves you to the next frame, as → would. Press A to turn it off or on, and a message says which; with it off, you decide and stay.
A decision shows at once in the strip, where the cell's bottom edge turns green, amber or red. The state pill in the header and the lit button on the pass line belong to the frame you are on, so with auto-advance on they show the next frame, not the one you just decided; press ← to see the decision there.
A Reject deletes nothing: the frame moves to the bin and stays there until you empty it. Emptying the bin is the only thing in Vixlo that deletes a photograph, and only from the library's own folder, never the card. Empty bin… sits on the pass line while Rejects is on screen and the bin holds something; it asks first, counting what it will remove (The one action that deletes a photograph).
Each library shows a bin rule, chosen in the last step of Creating a library, but the rule is shown and not acted on: handing off never empties the bin or asks to (Library rules).
Undoing
⌘Z takes back the last decision and says Last culling decision restored; ⇧⌘Z puts it back again. One history covers Single and Frames alike.
Every decision also shows a message in the corner that names the frame and what you did, for example DSCF1234.RAF marked Take, with its own Undo. That button is not ⌘Z: it sets back only the frame the message names, a new change that ⌘Z can take back in turn.
Comparing two frames
Press C to set the frame you are on beside the best other frame Vixlo can find (Compare). Press C or Esc to leave, or click Single or press ⌘1; each shows Single on the frame you are on. Esc first closes whatever is open nearer, such as a menu (Leaving Compare).
Narrowing the pass
The chips on the views line narrow what you are walking through. Undecided shows what is left to decide; Takes shows your takes; Holds your holds; Rejects the bin, and once the bin holds something, Restore all and Empty bin… join the pass line. Their counts add up to the count on All, the bin included.
A pass is a fixed list from the moment you open it. Deciding a frame while you walk Undecided does not pull it out from under you; the list is rebuilt only when you choose another chip, grouping or search.
Press G for Frames, the whole pass as one contact sheet, and G again to return to the canvas. Click a cell to make it active, double-click to open it in Single; the decision keys work on the active frame, and Esc leaves Frames.
Where to go next
- The takes. Edit takes (n) ↗ on the views line (
⇧⌘E) opens the edit page on your takes: Opening your takes in Edit. - Out of the app. Export… is in the ⋯ menu and the File menu; Three ways to send takes out tells Export, Hand off and Share review apart.
- The end of the pass.
→on the last frame says so in one message: Moving through the pass. - The keys. Tap
?for Your keys, the shortcuts popover; hold?for the whole map over the photograph (Reading your keys). Change a key under Vixlo ▸ Keyboard…. - Another library. ⋯ ▸ Library… lists every library and All libraries… returns to the launch screen (Opening, switching and closing).
