When edits cannot be stored

Three things leave the edit page open but unable to keep your work: a library whose photographs were never imported, an account that has gone read-only, and a single frame whose photograph lies outside the library. This page says how each looks, what still works, and which messages not to believe.

A library that cannot store adjustments

Vixlo comes with three libraries, the Earlier library rows on the launch screen, whose photographs are bundled inside the app rather than imported into a library folder of their own. Open one of these in Edit and a banner sits under the top panel. Its first line reads This library can't store adjustments, and under it a line says the photographs were never imported, so there is nowhere beside them for Vixlo to write.

The page stays open. Move a slider and the change is refused at once, with a message saying This library can't store adjustments, and the take stays as it was. The straighten and perspective bars are greyed out, and so are the two buttons in Match a reference that write a result, Use this look and Also match tone and colour. Export still writes real files. To develop these photographs, import them into a library of your own first (Importing an Earlier library).

When your account is read-only

When your trial, subscription or complimentary access has ended, the same place under the top panel reads Vixlo is read-only until you subscribe, with a line saying what has ended and what still works. A slider moved or R pressed is then refused with a message, and the take stays as it was. Export still writes real files. See What read-only means.

A frame outside the library

A library of your own can refuse an edit on one frame and take it on all the others: a frame whose photograph lies outside the library's folder. A photograph copied into another folder with Choose… beside the review's Working library row is one, and so is a frame an earlier build kept where it lay on the card. Vixlo writes an XMP file only inside the library, so such a frame has none and can get none. Move a slider on it and the change is refused with a message saying This library can't store adjustments, and the take stays as it was.

To bring the frame inside, scan the card (or the folder the photographs are in) into the same library again, with Working library left on the library's own Originals folder. File ▸ Scan Source… (⌘O) starts it from this page and takes you to the cull page, where the review opens (Scanning a card from here). The review offers the frame as new and copies it in. Continue to culling then points the frame you already have at the new copy, instead of adding a second one, with its decision, rating, label, notes and group as they were, and edits can be stored from then on. It has to be the card the frame came from: a different card that happens to use the same file names comes in as new frames, and the frame you have stays where it is. What an import copies has the rest of what a second scan does.

When the banner is wrong for the take

In Vixlo 0.1

The banner, the greyed straighten and perspective bars, the greyed Use this look and Also match tone and colour in Match a reference, and the Ask for an adjustment… field on the Tone tab are decided by the frame the cull's cursor is on, not by the take on the canvas. In a library of your own, if you left the cull on a frame whose photograph lies outside the library, every take shows the banner This library can't store adjustments, whose second line wrongly says the photographs were never imported, and those controls are greyed even on takes that can store edits. The Ask for an adjustment… field is dead too, with the reason This library can't store adjustments, so there is nothing to apply one to. The other way round, a take outside the library shows no banner while the cull's cursor is on a frame inside it. A slider is judged on the take itself, so it is refused only where the take cannot keep it, whatever the banner says.

To get the right banner, press Back to cull, put the cursor on a frame inside the library (or on the take itself), and open the edit page again.

Messages that say a change worked

In Vixlo 0.1

A refused slider says so, and you can believe it. Many other actions try the write, are refused, and then show their own success message in the same place, which replaces the refusal. Choosing a look, Reset all on a take that has adjustments, Apply … to all N takes, Apply to N similar, a paste, a sync, adding a spot clean and adding a mask all do. A look shows Classic Chrome applied with a line under it that starts with the file's name and ends metadata only, the original is untouched; a paste shows Settings pasted; Reset all shows Back to the original. Nothing was written and the take is as it was. The Undo on that message has nothing to take back.

While the banner is under the top panel, or on a frame outside the library, go by the take and not by the message: the picture, the look's name over it and the ringed swatch stay as they were. To keep adjustments, import the photographs into a library of your own, scan a frame that lies outside the library in again, or subscribe.
