Opening your takes in Edit

The edit page is where you develop the takes from a cull, one after another. Open it once the pass has settled and you know which frames are staying.

Two doors in

From the cull page, press Edit takes (N) on the views line under the photograph, just before the ⋯ button. The number counts every take in the library.

From the menu bar, choose File ▸ Edit takes (⇧⌘E). It is the same action.

The views line on the cull page, with Edit takes (12) just before the ⋯ button at its right-hand end

The page holds the takes in the pass the cull is showing, in the pass's order. If you have narrowed the pass, that can be fewer than the number on the button, or none. With no takes in the library at all, the button does not open the page; a message says No takes to edit yet.

The page opens in the same window, in place of the cull. Back to cull takes you back, and Edit takes (N) or ⇧⌘E on the cull brings you here again. Stepping through takes here moves the edit page's own cursor, not the cull's. A decision does move the cull's: rejecting a frame here, or deciding in the full screen you open from this page.

tip

⌘E is a different door. It is Hand off takes…, which writes files for another editor. ⇧⌘E is this page.

What is on the page

The whole edit page: the title bar, the top panel, the film simulations on the left, the canvas, the develop panel on the right, and the strip

From the top down:

  • The title bar. The Vixlo mark with an EDIT chip, the library's name over its path, and at the right Originals read-only and Saved, with a tick. Saved is explained under where edits are kept.
  • The top panel. At the left, Back to cull, an undo arrow (Undo last adjustment (⌘Z)) and where you are: 12 of 143 takes. In the middle, tool icons: crop, straighten, rotate, the two flips and spot clean; the sizes Fit the whole frame, 100% and 200%; the focus mask, the clipping warnings and the grid; then the four AI tools (Find distractions, AI lasso, Subject mask, Match a reference). In a window narrower than 1,500 points they fold into one three-dot button, AI tools. At the right, Before / after and Export N.
  • Film simulations, the column on the left: the looks, and under them the ways to carry a look or a set of settings to your other takes.
  • The canvas, in the middle: the photograph, with its name, its decision, its look and what you have done to it written over it.
  • The develop panel, the column on the right: the header reads DEVELOP, with Reset all and a button that folds the panel to a rail of icons; under it six tabs, Tone · Colour · Detail · Lens · Local · Changes (⌃1 to ⌃6). [ folds the panel and brings it back. Its tools start at Where the tools are.
  • The strip, along the bottom: Takes from the cull, every take as a cell, with the track under it.

The page asks for a window at least 1200 points wide and 800 tall.

Rest the pointer on a tool icon and a card opens with its name, what it does and its key, if it has one. The develop panel's sections open no card on hover; each header has a small ? that opens one when you click it.

The one decision the page makes

Press R and the frame on the canvas is rejected: the same decision the cull's R makes, with one message and one ⌘Z. The frame is no longer a take, so it leaves the list: the strip loses its cell, the count drops by one, and you land on the next take (or the one before, after the last). ⌘Z brings it back at its place in the list. This also moves the cull's cursor: it goes to the rejected frame and, with auto-advance on, on to the next one, as after a reject on the cull page.

The page makes only this one decision. Take, Hold, star ratings, colour labels and favourites are the cull's. The full screen you open from here with Space is the exception: it answers the cull's four decision keys, T, H, R and U (see Before/after, and the whole screen). R does nothing while you type in a field.

When there is nothing left to edit

With no takes to show (you rejected the last one, or the pass holds none) the page says No takes to edit and The edit page works on the takes the cull hands over., with Back to cull under it.

Scanning a card and reviewing holds from here

The File menu stays live on this page. Export… and Share… open their dialogs over it, as Export N does. Two other routes can take you to the cull page, where their work is done, and the edit page closes when they do.

  • File ▸ Scan Source… (⌘O) and File ▸ Import… do what ⋯ ▸ Library… ▸ Scan a card or folder… does on the cull page: a panel asks for a card or folder, and Review this import opens. The photographs are copied in and checked before they join the library (Adding a card to a library you already have). A second scan can also bring a frame outside the library inside it.
  • File ▸ Hand off takes… (⌘E) opens the hand-off dialog over this page, as it does on the cull. When holds remain, the dialog has a Review holds button, which shows Compare on the cull and so closes the edit page; with none, that button reads Close and you stay here. Compare opens on the frame the cull's own cursor was on, which can differ from the take on this page's canvas. Leaving Compare says how to leave it; each way shows Single on the frame the cull is on.

When the page cannot keep your changes

On one of the three Earlier library rows, and once your account has gone read-only, a banner sits under the top panel to say that nothing you change here can be stored. When edits cannot be stored has what still works there, the messages that say a change worked when it did not, a frame in a library of your own whose photograph lies outside the library's folder, and a banner that can be wrong for the take in Vixlo 0.1.

Developing without leaving the cull

In the cull's Single view, the Develop button at the right-hand end of the row under the photograph opens a small panel with the six film simulations, the eight tonal sliders and Reset. It writes to the same XMP file, so what you set there is waiting here. Come to this page for a look, a crop, a curve or a mask, a split against the original, a change carried to other takes, or a ⌘Z. The develop panel in Single has the small panel in full.
