The pass holds still

A pass does not reshuffle itself while you walk it. This page explains what Vixlo fixes when you open a pass, what can still change, and what comes back the next time you open the library. Read it if a frame you just decided is still in front of you and you expected it to vanish.

A decision does not take a frame out

When you open a pass — by choosing a chip, changing what the pass is grouped by, or committing a search — Vixlo fixes the list of frames it holds. Deciding a frame does not take it out of the pass you are in, even when the decision means it no longer matches. A Take made while you are walking Undecided stays where it is, wearing its green edge, until the pass is built again.

The counts on the views line update live, so you can see the Undecided count fall as you go. What → walks does not shuffle under you: the frame after this one is the frame that was after it when you started, and ← takes you back to the one you just decided.

A pass can grow at its end

Whatever comes to match the pass while you are walking it is added after everything already there, with your cursor exactly where it was. The common case is a proposal pass. The app keeps proposing as you decide: it reacts to a Take at once, and what it newly proposes is added to the end of the pass you are walking. The new frames arrive in the pass's own order among themselves. See Accepting, or deciding for yourself.

When a pass is built again

The pass is built afresh the next time you change any of the things it is made of: the state, a mark (a rating, Favourite or a colour label), a chip, the first level of the grouping, the sort or the search. Then the frames you decided drop out of a pass they no longer match. The second level of the grouping (the → Session half of Grouped by Camera body → Session), stacking and sections change how the frames are drawn and leave the pass as it is.

Reopening a library

Quit and reopen a library and the pass comes back as you left it: the same frames in the same order, your cursor on the same frame, and the chips that narrowed it back on the views line — the state, a person, a place, a rating or Favourite, Look at these, a search. A colour label and the Proposed takes and Proposed rejects passes are the exceptions; the caution below says what happens to them. What comes back when you reopen a library lists the rest of what is restored.

If a chip can no longer be rebuilt, Vixlo restores no pass at all rather than part of one. The views line reads All over the whole library, and a message says which chip went, or that a search's frames could not be read back: Your last pass could not be restored, with one of these under it:

  • The person it was narrowed to is gone · the whole library is on screen
  • The place it was narrowed to is gone · the whole library is on screen
  • The saved search “Evening” is gone · the whole library is on screen
  • The frames the saved search “Evening” found could not be read back · the whole library is on screen
  • The frames that search found could not be read back · the whole library is on screen

A colour label is put down every time a library opens, and Vixlo does not save a Proposed takes or Proposed rejects pass at all. The frames you were walking still come back, so the pass holds only the frames with that label, or only the ones proposed, while the views line shows no chip for it. The pass line does not name the label or the proposal: it reads the library, or the name of whatever else narrows the pass — a state such as Undecided frames, a person, a place, a rating, a search — and the number after of is smaller than the frames that name suggests.

Click All on the views line. That builds the pass again from the whole library, and you can choose the label or the proposal chip again from there. A rating or Favourite is kept, with its chip.
