Single and Frames

A pass can be looked at in two ways. Single is one photograph at a time, full size: this is where culling happens. Frames is the whole pass as one contact sheet, for seeing the shape of a shoot and finding your way around it. The three bands under the photograph are identical in both, so nothing moves when you switch. This page covers switching and Single; Frames covers the contact sheet.

Switching between them

  • Click Single or Frames at the head of the views line. Single always shows the photograph: with Compare on screen, where Single is already lit, a click on it puts Compare away.
  • Press G. It toggles: G opens Frames, G again brings you back to the canvas you left, which is Compare if you opened Frames from there.
  • Choose View ▸ Single (⌘1) or View ▸ Frames (⌘2). ⌘1 shows the photograph, even when Compare is on screen or waiting behind Frames.
  • In Frames, press Esc to come back, to Single or to Compare if that is where you left it. Esc closes one thing at a time, in this order: the Your keys panel, the account panel, a menu, the reasons card, the criteria pane, the Stack Resolver, then Compare, which it turns into Single, and last of all Frames. In Single with nothing open, Esc does nothing.
  • In Frames, click the frame you are already on, or double-click any frame, and Single opens on it, even if you came to Frames from Compare. A double-click on a stack's cover opens the Stack Resolver instead (Frames).

Vixlo remembers which view you were in with the library, and whether Compare was up.

Single

The photograph is fitted to the whole area between the two chevrons; a portrait sits centred with space either side. The chevrons step to the previous and next frame, and so do ← and →.

An undeveloped RAW frame is shown as the JPEG the camera embedded in it — the picture you saw on the camera's screen. The moment a frame has any develop setting, its preview is rendered from the sensor with those settings on top, so what you cull is what you would export.

C swaps the photograph for Compare, two photographs side by side, and C again swaps it back. Compare is a second canvas for Single, not a third view: Single stays lit while it is on screen, and it has none of the row described next. Leaving Compare lists the ways out.

Under the photograph is one row:

  • the app's proposal for this frame, when there is one, as a pill with a why link (see The reasons card);
  • an advisory, when the app has one — analysis about the frame, never a decision about it;
  • the colour label menu, a small tag. It is one of two places a label is set; the other is ⋯ ▸ Colour label…;
  • where the frame came from, in the app's monospaced face: 23 Aug · 09:12–09:40 · X-T4 · Card A — the session's day and span, the camera body, and the card or folder it was read from;
  • Focus check, with its key, which becomes Fit image while you are zoomed in — see Zoom and the focus check;
  • Develop, which opens a small develop panel beside the photograph without leaving Single: the six film simulations, eight sliders and Reset. The develop panel in Single covers it; the full six-tab panel is on the edit page (Where the tools are).

When a pass is empty

A pass is empty when nothing matches it: you chose Takes before you had taken a frame, or a chip narrowed the pass to nothing. What you see depends on whether the library has photographs in it.

A library with no photographs at all is the one case where Single says so. The canvas reads This library is empty, with Scan a card or a folder to put photographs in it. under it, and the three decision buttons dim. Frames reads one line in the middle of the sheet, Nothing in this pass., unless it is grouped by Session cards. That grouping draws its card view in place of the sheet, so the sentence is never shown under it.

In Vixlo 0.1

When the pass is empty but the library is not, Single does not say so. It shows the library's first photograph, with its header and the row under it, although that frame is not in the pass. The pass line gives it away: it reads the pass's name and 0 frames, such as ● Takes 0 frames, and the strip under the photograph has no cells. Frames is plain about it with Nothing in this pass., except when it is grouped by Session cards, which has no sentence for it: there the pass line and the empty strip are the signs.

The photograph on screen is live. The three decision buttons, T, H, R and U, the stars, the heart, the colour label and the note all act on that first photograph, not on anything in the pass. ← and → do nothing and full screen will not open. Read the pass line before you press a decision key. To leave an empty pass, click All on the views line, or put down the chip that emptied it with its ×.

An empty proposal pass (Proposed takes, Proposed rejects or Look at these) is neither of those. All leaves it open, and its chip has no ×. Click the lit proposal chip beside the word PROPOSED again to close the pass, or turn the Proposals switch off (⇧⌘P, or View ▸ Proposals), which also hides every proposal mark until you turn it back on. What a proposal is shows where they are.
