Organise and filter

Organise and filter, the side panel's second pane, lays out on one page how the pass is grouped, stacked and sorted, and what is narrowing it. Come here to see the whole arrangement at once, or for the three things only this pane has: the Similar photos slider, Clear filters and Save view.

The top half of the Organise and filter pane: the sentence, Group by, Then by, the sort, stacking and the two sliders

The sentence at the top

The top half of the pane is the arrangement. Under the word ORGANISE, one line says it as the Frames header says it: Grouped by Camera body → Session · similar frames stacked · sorted by capture time. It changes as you change the chips below.

Group by, and Then by

Group by — from the photographs’ own metadata offers every axis as a chip: Session, Capture date, Camera body, Source card, Lens, Rating, Culling state, Session cards. The chosen one is lit. Then by — second level, maximum two offers Nothing and every axis except the one already chosen; Session cards is never a second level. Choosing Session cards as the first level puts the second level down for you. What each axis reads is on How a shoot is grouped.

Sort inside groups

Five orders: Capture time, File name, Rating, high first, Focus confidence, Recently changed. This is the order inside each group, and the order ← and → walk, until a search takes over. While a search chip is up, typed in ⌘K or saved, the pass keeps the search's own order, which in 0.1 is the order the library lists its frames in, and changing the sort does not reorder it.

Similar frames stacked

A switch. On, a burst sits behind one cover in Frames; off — Stacks expanded — every frame there has a cell of its own. It changes only how Frames draws the sheet.

Similar photos

A slider for how alike two frames must be before they stack. Its reading is a percentage and the setting's word, and under the track is a live count of what it makes: 12 stacks · 31 frames, or Nothing grouped at this setting. The sentence beneath says what the slider does not do: Grouping only — nothing is rejected at any setting. Honoured by Frames and the stack resolver; Single walks every frame. A bracket or a panorama is never split by it; see Sets kept whole.

Session gap

A slider that walks the four gaps a session can be cut on — 15, 30, 45 and 90 minutes — with the reading 45 min · 6 sessions, counting the sessions in the pass on screen. Moving it re-cuts every session at once and a message says the new count. It is the one setting here that changes every session-shaped thing in the app: the tree, the group headings, the session cards and the session in each frame's header.

Filter without changing groups

The bottom half, under a rule and the label FILTER WITHOUT CHANGING GROUPS, narrows the pass and never regroups it.

  • Rating — six small buttons, any then 1 to 5. A number means exactly that many stars, not that many and up.
  • Favourites only — a switch.
  • The chips — every narrowing on the pass right now, each with its own ×: the person, the place, the mark, the search. They are the views line's own, so each can be put down in either place. Here the mark is written in words (4 stars, Favourites, Blue label), where the views line draws it.
  • The line — 18 of 66 frames pass these filters: the pass, over the library.
  • Clear filters — puts down the person, the place, the mark and the search in one click. The state chip on the views line, such as Takes, stays.
  • Save view — keeps the narrowing on screen, as far as words can say it, as a saved search, named from its chips (Takes · 4 stars), and a message says where it went: In Groups, with a live count · rename it there. See Recent and saved searches.

The filter half of the pane: Rating, Favourites only, the chips, the line and the two buttons

A rating, Favourites and a colour label are one mark between them, so switching Favourites only on replaces a rating you had chosen, and the other way round.

tip

Save view has nothing to save until something is narrowing the pass, and it says so: Narrow the pass first — a state, a rating, a person, a place or a search. It also refuses a colour label (A colour label is not something a saved search can say yet) and a person you have not named (Name that face first — an unnamed person has no word to save).

In Vixlo 0.1

Three more narrowings are not saved as they look, and Save view does not say so.

  • A saved search on the views line is left out. Save view writes the state, the rating or Favourites, a named person and a place as words, then adds any words you typed into ⌘K; a saved search leaves none, because running one clears them. With Takes and the saved search Maya at the beach up, Save view makes a row called Takes · Maya at the beach whose words are just status:pick. With the saved search alone it refuses with Narrow the pass first… although a search is up.
  • A proposal pass is left out. No search can say one. Save view keeps the other narrowings on the line, or refuses if there are none.
  • A journey is saved as a search that finds nothing. The message says it was saved, under a name such as Journey to Florence — June 2024, but the row's words are place: and that name, and place: reads the names of places only. The row counts 0 and does nothing when clicked. Right-click it and choose Delete; the journey's own row in the Groups pane is how to narrow to it.

To keep a saved search's narrowing with the others, save from the search panel instead: press ⌘K, type the whole narrowing out in words, such as status:pick person:maya place:beach, and click Save this search….

Where else these controls are

Most of this pane is also on the page itself. The grouping, the stacking and the sort are phrases on the Frames header, and so is the session gap under Session cards. A rating or Favourites is the ★ menu on the views line. Only the Similar photos slider, Clear filters and Save view are here alone.

Two arrangements live only elsewhere: in sections or in one grid, on the Frames header, and a colour label, on the ● menu at the right-hand end of the views line — see Stars, favourites and colour labels.
