Narrowing the pass

The pass is the set of frames you are walking: what ← and → step through, what Frames lays out, what the strip at the bottom shows. Every narrowing of it is stated on one line, the views line, directly under the pass line beneath the photograph. Some are set elsewhere — a person or a place in the Groups pane, the Rating buttons in Organise and filter, a search — but each one shows on this line as a chip, so when you wonder why a frame is not on screen, this line is the answer.

The views line: Single and Frames, the five state chips with their counts, a mark chip and a person chip, the two mark menus

The five state chips

After Single and Frames come five chips, one on at a time: All, Undecided, Takes, Holds, Rejects. Each has its glyph — a stack of layers, a circle, a tick, a dash, a bin — its word and its count. Click one and the pass is those frames. Hover one to read it: Takes · 12.

Rejects is the bin. While it is on and the bin holds something, the bin's own line comes up on the pass line above — the count and, when measured, the size, with Restore all and Empty bin…. Under Rejects the proposal chips are not drawn, because a rejected frame carries no proposal.

Undecided

Undecided is the app's word for a frame with no decision yet. The state pill at the left of the header above the photograph shows a decision in its own colour — green for a Take, amber for a Hold, red for a Reject — and draws an undecided frame with no fill, only its edge. The Undecided chip on the views line counts how much of the pass is left to decide. U puts a frame back to Undecided.

The chips

To the right of the state chips, a chip appears for each further narrowing, in this order: the person, the place (or journey), the mark (drawn as its stars, heart or swatch) and the search (its typed text, or a saved search's name). Each has its own × that puts that one down. The person, place and search chips also wear the glyph of the section they came from — a person, a pin, a magnifier.

A frame stays in the pass only if it matches every one of them, and that is the point: Takes with ★★★★★ with Maya with Rome, Italy is Maya's five-star takes in Rome.

The counts are about the screen

Every count on the line says what clicking that control would leave on screen, with everything else still applied — not what the library holds. With Maya up, Takes · 12 is Maya's takes. While no rating, Favourites or label is chosen, the four after All add up to it; a mark changes that, because a rejected frame is under no mark (see What the counts mean). A chip carries no count of its own, because its count is the pass: that number is on the pass line, as your position — 1 of 24.

The one pair of combinations the line will not offer is a decided state inside a proposal pass. While a proposal pass is open, Takes and Holds are dimmed, carry no count and cannot be clicked; hover either for the reason, a decided frame carries no proposal. Click the open proposal chip again to put that pass down, and the two come back.

When the pass is empty

A narrowing can leave nothing. A library with no photographs at all is the one case where Single says so: This library is empty, with Scan a card or a folder to put photographs in it. under it.

In Vixlo 0.1

When a narrowing empties the pass of a library that does hold photographs, Single does not say so. It goes on showing the library's first photograph, although that frame is not in the pass, and the decision keys act on it. The pass line reads 0 frames and the strip under the photograph has no cells. Frames says Nothing in this pass. in the middle of the sheet. Under Session cards it does not: the sheet fills with cards for the library's import groups, none of them holding a frame, and Session cards says what they are.

To leave an empty pass, put down the chip that is hiding the frames with its ×, or click All. Single and Frames has the whole of it, including an empty proposal pass.

Putting everything down

All frames, at the head of the Groups pane, puts every chip down and the state back to All in one click; an open proposal pass stays, and its own chip is what puts it down. Clear filters, in Organise and filter, puts the chips down and leaves the state. A chip's own × puts down that one, and so does clicking the same person's circle or place row again, or choosing the same row of a mark menu again.

The pass holds still while you work

When you narrow the pass, Vixlo fixes its list of frames: deciding a frame does not take it out, even when it no longer matches, and a frame that comes to match is added at the end. The pass is built afresh the next time you change the state, a mark, a chip, the first level of the grouping, the sort or the search; the second level and the choice between sections and one grid only change how Frames draws it. Reopen the library and the pass comes back with its chips on the line, except as the caution below says. The pass holds still covers both.

In Vixlo 0.1

A colour label's chip is not restored when you reopen a library, but the pass it made can be. If you quit with a colour label chosen, the library opens with no label chip, yet the pass is the frozen list built while the label was on: it holds only the frames that wore the label, the pass line counts fewer frames than the library, and no chip says why. The passes opened by the proposed Takes and Rejects chips do the same, because only Look at these is saved as a chip.

To rebuild the pass from the chips that are showing, click All on the views line. All frames at the head of the Groups pane does the same and puts down any chip as well. To narrow to the label again, choose it from the ● menu.

Proposals on this line

Between the state chips and your chips sit the proposals switch and, when it is on, three chips under the word PROPOSED: Takes, Rejects and Look at these. They narrow the pass exactly as the state chips do and compose with everything else. What a proposal is says what they mean.
